Success at grading and Bill Winfield Memorial children's competition

10 November 2014

Successful club members at kyu grading Last Sunday saw club members take part in two events: our last kyu grading of the year and the annual Bill Winfield Memorial Children's competition.

The grading, hosted by Bath Shotokan Karate Club, was presided over by Sensei Bob Poynton, 8th Dan of the KUGB. This time, twenty students from the Nailsea and Backwell clubs took part, and all twenty were awarded their next belt.

The club instructors would especially like to congratulate Stephanie Williams, who graded straight to full 8th kyu (red belt) and also Diana Nicoll and Sharon Mahmood who graded straight to temporary 8th kyu.

The Bill Winfield Memorial competition is a small, friendly event set up to remember Bristol-based instructor Bill Winfield, who was sensei to club founder, Bryan Gideon. Our clubs have a strong history of performing well at the event and this year was no different.

Congratulations to Brandon Cole, who was awarded 2nd place in lower grade kata and to Hannah Nicoll, who came 2nd in kumite. In the higher grade category our students took three out of four placings. Sam Henley took first place in kata and also first place in kumite ahead of Josh Mashford who placed second in an all-Backwell final.

Congratulations to all club members that took part in the grading and competition.
